It’s important to look picture perfect on your wedding day by properly caring for your gown after bringing it home and before you walk down the hallway. Following a few simple wedding dress cleaning and preservation steps will ensure that your dress looks as beautiful on your wedding day as when you first saw it in the store.
Tips for Wedding Dress Cleaning And Preservation:
#1 – Colour Protection For Fabric:
Sunlight can fade colours and even “bleach” cloth, discolouring decorations. To avoid fading and dis-colouration while it may be tempting to keep the dress on display, keep it in a dark spot away from direct sunlight, such as a closet or spare bedroom. Dresses should be stored in a transparent, breathable fabric garment bag (rather than plastic, we’ll explain shortly).
#2 – Prevention of Water Damage:
Water or even slightly damp air can damage clothing. The most common types of damage are watermarks and mildew stains. The solution is to store your clothes somewhere cold, dry, and climate-controlled. Remove any plastic from your dress to allow it to “breathe” and keep it away from water sources or potential leaks, such as open windows.
Keep your gown out of the basements or attic! Attics are typically heated, and there isn’t always enough air movement or ventilation, resulting in excessive humidity. Basements are prone to floods, which can affect air circulation and circulation.

#3 – Stretch Protection For Your Dress:
Many bridal gowns are made of heavy fabrics and embellishments, which might stretch if not maintained properly.
Dresses should always be hung from the inside hanger loops. It reduces the strain on the sleeves and straps’ delicate fabrics. The hanger loops, not the actual straps of the garment, should support a large weight of the dress when it is hung. To allow the dress to hang properly, it may have up to four sets of these loops.
Make use of them! Dresses should never be hung on their elastic shoulder straps. These straps aren’t designed to support a dress’s weight; rather, they keep straps in position for off-the-shoulder dresses.
If your gown is really heavy (especially if it is a fully beaded type), laying it flat may be preferable. Leave your dress in the breathable fabric cloth bag (or wrap it in a clean white cotton sheet or specially made non-acidic tissue paper), carefully fold it, and store it in a temperature-controlled closet on a protected flat surface.
#4 – Remove Weird Smells:
Pets are usually interested and like sniffing novel scents and hiding places. The last thing you want is to find that your dress has a few new frills and lace thanks to some loving scratches, let alone other “catastrophes” that may leave your dress smelling bad.
Keep your dress off the floor in a place where pets won’t be able to get to it. Dresses, like all materials, can absorb odours from their surroundings. Keeping clothing away from cigarette smoke, food odours, and other household odours is good.
#5 – Safely Remove Wrinkles:
The only thing you’ll have to worry about the week before your wedding is removing any creases if your dress was correctly stored. Hanging your clothing high and using a hand-held steamer to remove wrinkles may be enough for lightweight, basic gowns.
