Laundry is like dust in that it is everywhere and never seems to end. The more children you have, the more laundry you’ll have to wash, and the more important it is to establish good washing practices for your children. I’m a huge believer in teaching our children how to care for their things and help with their upkeep–and this covers everything from putting away their legs to doing laundry. It isn’t easy to keep up laundry with kids, but I’ve taught my kids to help; here are some effective laundry cleaning tips.
Effective Ways to Teach Your Children to Do Laundry:
#1 – Sorting Clothes:
Every child’s room has a laundry hamper for kids. From the age of three, they can all put their clothing in the hamper. Remove your dirty clothing and place them in the hamper instead of scattered about the house. The older children have two laundry hampers, one for whites and the other for coloured clothes. Teach them to divide denim into a different bucket.
#2 – Read The Labels:
Teach your children to read garment labels before washing them. Some advice turning the garment inside out, some advise dry cleaning only, and others advise washing in cold water. Whether it says line dry or recline to dry on the label, don’t put it in the dryer unless you want little clothes. The sweater on my daughter shrunk. I normally save this task for children aged 12 and up to avoid difficulty. Go ahead to do it if you have a responsible 8- or 10-year-old.

#3 – Taking Dirty Clothes to the Washing Machine:
Of course, before you can do any laundry, you must get the dirty clothes off the child, into the laundry basket or hamper, and into the laundry room. Here’s how to make it simple for the whole family to get their clothes to the washing machine if they’re rushing from school to practise rather than from the gym to work.
- For garments that require standard laundering, such as school uniforms and play clothes, provide laundry containers in each bathroom or bedroom.
- Laundry baskets should be strategically placed. Things that require regular laundering, like school uniforms and play clothes, should be placed in laundry containers in each bathroom or bedroom.
#4 – Teach Them How to Use the Washing Machine:
As every washing machine is different, you’ll have to adjust your instructions accordingly. Make sure they go over these settings and buttons to you and explain how they function and what they signify!

#5 – Instruct Them On How to Use the Dryer:
Start by explaining all the buttons and controls, what they imply, and how to operate them. Show them the dust catcher after that. Explain that you should clean this after each load.
#6 – Teach Them How to Fold the Garments:
We take about a third of the load at a time and fold it on the master bed at our house. We put the remaining items on the “fluff” cycle while folding the first part of the load. After that, we fold the remaining laundry in stages. Take the time to explain how to fold each item. Here are some important things to consider:
- How to turn socks, shirts, and other items
- Match socks and lay t-shirts out flat to avoid wrinkles.
- Folding shorts and pants
#7 – Show Children How to Properly Arrange and Store Their Clothes:
I tell my kids to take one pile at a time; otherwise, things get put out randomly! That’s all there is to it! Don’t doubt the capacity of your children! My youngster has left an impression on me! He’s enjoyed taking on new responsibilities, and he’s now an expert in the laundry room! It’s wonderful that he can help us with at least some of the laundry! Plus, he’s always ready to include his younger brother, who is five years old!
